#66 Beaufort, NC
October 9th continued
On the recommendation of some campers that Lynn spoke
with, we went to Morehead City for dinner at the Ruddy Duck Tavern. We were surprised their clam chowder was a
clear broth with fish and clams. It
looked like a soup. We did have a good meal.
Then some of us went for ice cream across the street after dinner. While
talking with the girls in the shop next door, they told us to go to Beaufort,
just 5 minutes over the bridge. Beaufort I “America’s Favorite Town” by Travel
+ Leisure. In 2012 it was ranked as
“America’s Coolest Small Town” by readers of Budget Travel Magazine.
So off we went!
Beaufort originally created a port of safety for
fishermen in the late 1600s. Visitors
include patriots, privateers, merchants, and skilled craftsmen. We found a quaint little town full of
historic houses and buildings.
Note: Those of you
who don’t want to see anymore old houses may want to skip this one,
As we drive around NC, we have noticed that at this time of year, many boats sit out of the water on supports. Some boats sit in storage lots with levels of boats.
Other boats like this yacht stayed moored to its dock.
A neighborhood of large homes leads the way into the
historic part of town. The second one
looks like a series of multiplexes, but I wonder if it could have been a single
home at one time. Each historical home
displays a sign stating its age.
The downtown area still has angle parking and historic
buildings.
How would you like to sit and rock on this porch?
This church sat on a corner in the historic
district. A cemetery adjoins the church.
Beaufort could be an interesting place to spend some
time.
On to Myrtle Beach!
